The first robbery in the film is dream-like in it’s filming, not unlike a video game or movie. While this may not seem like a particularly bold or unique statement, it doesn’t undermine the precision and skill the Korine attacks the issue.

WARNING: FULL SPOILERS AHEAD! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNEDĪnother theme of the film is the idea that the girl’s perception of violence (so in other word, ours as a society) is completely inaccurate.
Franco deserved all the credit he received for this performance and more, it is truly a transformative role. We truly get to see all of his shit, and every scene he is in is a pure delight. James Franco steals the show as the hilarious hustler/rapper Alien. How far from the truth the really are is the entire premise of the film. One scene even features the girls singing along and dancing to Alien singing them a Brittney Spears song, holding their assault rifles like stripper poles to further sexualize and glamourize their perception of violence. They believe in a life parties, that violence is just like a movie or video game, and that nothing wrong can ever happen. A constant barrage of tits and ass leave the viewer numb to the reality of the situation, much like the characters in the film. The film instantly desensitizes the viewers to the events that will occur right from the get go. Through the use of stars that are idolized by children (Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens in particular), Korine is able to further hammer home the theme that the ideals of youth are unrealistic. This is further exemplified with the brilliant casting of the film. Like many kids in today’s world, the ideal life is a life of carefree fun and parties without any of the repercussions that occur as a result. In Spring Breakers, the characters believe they will find their true selves on spring break. Both deal the downfall of characters due to the disillusioned perception of the American Dream. Spring Breakers, in many regards is not unlike The Great Gatsby. Spring Breakers is a relentless and visceral assault on both the senses of the viewers and the ideals and dreams of the exact audience the film was marketed to. These may be seen as most as flaws, but they are exactly what Korine was aiming for in his film. It’s self absorbed, and lacks any real character development for the most part. Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers is one of the most misunderstood films in years.
